ATTACK ON UN CAMP IN MALI LEAVES 10 DEAD AND OTHERS INJURED
Ten UN peacekeepers dies during an attack in Mali
A recent attack on UN’s Camp for multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission (MINUSMA) in Mali, have lead to the killing of 10 UN peacekeepers from Chad while another 25 were injured. This report is according to the statement from UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres.
According to reports; the assailants attacked the MINUSMA forces at Aguelhok village in the Kidal region close to the Algerian border. The MINUSMA forces while responding also killed some of the assailants. Though the secretary-general’s statement did not mention who carried out the attack, there are speculations that an Al Qaeda-linked group called Jamat Nusrat Al Islam wal Muslimeen is responsible.
Guterres while sending his condolences to the government of Chad and families of the deceased; He also urged the Malian government and authorities to strive in identifying the attackers.
In his statement, Guterres condemned the attack and also said that targeting UN peacekeepers could constitute a war crime.
Mali have become a deadly posting for UN peacekeepers as last year April two(2) peacekeepers also lost their lives. In November 2017, four(4) peacekeepers and a Malian soldier died in a attack; while in August 2017, seven(7) persons also died in Timbuktu during an attack on MINUSMA headquarters.
The most recent attack on Sunday, 20th January 2019; have heightened the concerns for the about 13,000 peacekeepers in Mali, who have become target of a concerted guerrilla campaign.
